Odisha Assembly Election Result 2019 LIVE Updates: BJD leads in 90 seats, crosses half-way mark in trends
In
2009, when the BJP and BJD fought separately for the first time after
Naveen Patnaik had called off their decade-long alliance, the BJP had
managed to win only six Assembly seats and zero Lok Sabha seats.
BJD had won 14 Lok Sabha seats and 103 Assembly seats while the Congress had managed to win 27 Assembly seats and six Parliamentary seats.
In 2014, the BJD had won 117 assembly seats and 20 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP had won 10 Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat. Congress had won 16 Assembly seats and had drawn a blank in Parliamentary constituencies.
Exit polls released on May 19 after the seventh and final phase of the general elections concluded had shown significant gains for the BJP in the state. While the exit polls predicted a fifth term for Patnaik, they had also suggested an increase in BJP's Assembly seats to around 20-40 this time.

The ruling Biju Janata Dal(BJD) was leading in nine Lok Sabha seats in Odisha as per initials trends. In Aska Lok Sabha seat BJD seat Pramila Bisoyi is leading against her nearest BJP rival Anita Subhadarshini by 852 votes.
Prasanna Acharya of the BJD is leading by 358 votes against his nearest BJP rival Suresh Pujari in the Bargarh Lok Sabha constituency.
In Balangir Lok Sabha seat Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo of the BJP is leading against her nearest rival Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo of the BJD by 727 votes.
BJD candidate Mahesh Sahoo is leading against his nearest BJP rival Rudra Narayan Pany by 1,349 votes in the Dhenkanal seat.
Sarmistha Sethi of BJD is leading against her nearest BJP rival Amiya Kanta Mallick by 513 votes in the Jajpur seat.
In the Kalahandi Lok Sabha seat, Basanta Kumar Panda of BJP is leading against his nearest BJD rival Puspendra Singh Deo by 195 votes.
Achyutananda Samanta of the BJD is leading against his nearest BJP rival Kharabela Swain of BJP by 756 votes in the Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat.
In Keonjhar seat BJD candidate Chandrani Murmu is leading against her nearest BJP rival Ananta Nayak by 329 votes.
Kausalaya Hikaka of the BJD is leading against his Congress rival Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka by 226 votes in Koraput Lok Sabha seat.
In Nabarangpur seat, Ramesh Chandra Majhi of BJD is leading against his nearest BJP rival Balabhadra Majhi by 114 votes.
Nalini Kanta Pradhan of BJD is leading against his nearest BJP rival Nitesh Ganga Deb by 677 votes in the Sambalpur seat. (PTI)

Trends indicate BJD steadily heading towards the halfway mark of 73 in Odisha assembly (146 of the 147 assembly seats went to polls, with the Patkura assembly constituency polls being postponed by the EC in view of the cyclone Fani). BJD is currently leading in 72 seats with the BJP leading in 20 seats while Congress is a distant third, gaining advantage in 11 assembly constituencies.

Counting of votes for the 21 Lok Sabha seats and 146 Assembly segments in Odisha is being held at 63 different centres across the state amidst tight security.
Polling was held in 21 Lok Sabha seats and 146 Assembly segments in four different phases on April 11, 18, 23 and 29.
Each counting hall will have at least seven tables each for Assembly and Lok Sabha seats and three officials including a supervisor, a counting assistant and a micro observer will be engaged for each table to ensure free and fair counting of votes. (PTI)

BJD candidate Pradeep Maharathy was jailed for attacking an EC flying squad, while BJP candidate from Puri assembly constituency, Om Prakash Mishra, faced arrest for destroying EVMs during the third phase of polling.

For Patnaik and BJD, the alarm bells started ringing after the 2017 Panchayat elections when the BJP had managed to win 306 of the 853 zilla parishad seats.

Several top leaders from the BJP, including PM Modi, Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Smriti Irani campaigned in Odisha during the polls.
PM Modi addressed 10 rallies in the state and also did a roadshow, while Amit Shah took part in six.
Congress, the main Opposition party in Odisha, conducted a toned-down campaign. Congress President Rahul Gandhi conducted five rallies in the state, and the state Congress unit was reportedly unhappy with the Congress chief for ignoring the state.

The politics of Odisha, before Patnaik's entry, was dominated by Congress, and Congress stalwarts like Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Biju Patnaik, Hemanand Biswal and Giridhar Gamang among others.
However, Biju Patnaik left the Congress in 1969 to form the Utkal Congress, which was later merged into the Janata Party.
Congress' rule reigned supreme in the state, with leaders like Janaki Patnaik making a personal fortress out of the state. The state had a non-Congress government thrice before the BJD came to power.

There were many firsts for Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik this time around: he addressed the most number of rallies at 100, the highest for him in any election.
Political observers and reports have suggested that this was to counter rumors about his ill-health.
This was also the first election when he contested from two seats: Hinjili, his home turf in southern part of the state, and Bijepur, in western Odisha, where the BJD's influence is reported to have waned at the cost of BJP's rise in the region.
