Govt taps farmers as tomato prices soar

Farm cooperatives in India are working to procure tomatoes directly from farmers to sell at discounted prices in major consumption centres. The move comes as tomato prices have soared in recent weeks due to disruptions in supply caused by floods and crop damage. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed) has been directed by the Department of Consumer Affairs to buy tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra and distribute them in centres including Delhi. Prices in the capital have risen to INR180 ($2.65) per kg, up from INR20-30 per kg at the end of June.
