Inside indian aviation’s high-stakes battle
Indian carriers, particularly IndiGo, have gained more passenger share in the international traffic to and from India, thanks to a change in the country's policy on bilateral foreign flying rights. The share of Indian carriers increased to 44% in 2022-23 from 40% in 2018-19, while the share of foreign carriers decreased to 56% from 60% in the same period. IndiGo registered a significant jump in international passengers carried, filling the void left by Jet Airways, through its three-pronged international expansion strategy of expansion, code shares, and leased Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines.
