No Liquor Shops On Highways From April, Supreme Court Orders

New Delhi:  Liquor shops will not be allowed on highways from April, the Supreme Court said today. The license of existing shops will not be renewed.

Liquor shops must be at least 500 metres away from state and national highways, said the court, and ordered that liquor banners and ads be removed.

The orders have to be implemented by the Chief Secretary and police chiefs of states.

The top court had indicated that it would order the shutting of all liquor shops on highways for the safety and security of commuters who get distracted, which caused accidents.

The court was hearing petitions challenging various high court verdicts which held that liquor shops be located at a distance from state highways so that they are neither visible nor accessible to the commuters.
